I will always remember Susan as a happy, friendly gal. On one of the many bus trips going to a basketball or football game it was like a giant slumber party. We were busy putting our hair in rollers, singing (which I know we were asked if we were ever going to quit--ahh no). It was such a fun time-Susan was a cheerleader and I was in Pep Club. Those bus trips were so fun and Susan was a big part that made it fun.. She was a friend to many! I miss her.

Carol Merrett (Gilbert)

Martinsen came before Merrett, so Susan always sat in front of me in the classes we shared.  We got in trouble passing notes back and forth; some were our notes and others were "pass along" to someone else.  Mr. Klies, our Freshman Science teacher, was not amused and when we were caught in the act would say:  "Miss Martinsen and Miss Merrett "take five" which meant that we had to stand-up in class for five minutes.  Mr. Klies was a scary guy, but I guess he wasn't that scary as we stood up more than once in his class.

One summer, we took a Nurse Aide class together at St. James Hospital.  It was her idea as she wanted to be a nurse at that time; I went along, though at the time I wanted to be a teacher.  Susan was standing next to me in a hot classroom when I passed out during a demonstration,  Her's was the face I saw when I awoke.  She went on to be a teacher and I the nurse.  I lost contact with her after high school.

I agree with Heather, Susan was fun, and I am glad for the times we shared.  I am so sorry that she is not here to join us in this celebration of 50 years since all that fun.  Missing her.   Carol Merrett Gilbert
